A snake in the grass

Only yesterday evening I was telling friends that I’d recently seen a good sized grass snake in a sunny spot at the edge of the paddock; lo and behold, late this afternoon near to where I’d seen the creature I came across this sloughed skin – which took considerable effort to tease out of the undergrowth.
That red/white pole is a metre long; and allowing that I couldn’t stretch the skin any straighter, also that the tail tip broke off despite my best efforts, you can see that the original owner was quite a handsome size.
