Concert sketches

Symphonica Tywi gave a really great concert of film music last night at a novel venue for me, the new Haverfordwest High School. An impressive place, and a good hall with well-tiered seating and plenty of room for the musicians. Possibly St Mary’s Church in town has a richer acoustic because of its size, but the school wins hands-down for the clarity of individual instruments in the orchestra – and when it comes to warmth and sketching lines of sight!

I was sitting close to the “Engine Room” – the double basses nearest, with the tuba and heavier brass just beyond. Michael Grange in foreground; Emyr Morris alongside.
“The Boss”: Mike Cottam conducting. Drawn at really quite some distance, so I hope he won’t mind that it is only a rough impression of him hard at work with his favourite composer, John Williams.
