Now that’s what I call woodworm!

Truly “woodworm”, indeed: what we often call woodworm in the home are furniture beetles. These are tunnels bored in sea driftwood by Teredo Navalis, the naval shipworm. What makes attack by these creatures so dangerous is that they can bore back and forth along the length of a piece of timber, eating away a lot more material than this, with hardly any surface indication that they are hard at work inside. Hence numerous incidents in the past of wooden ships breaking up without warning.
