Poem: Head and Heart

January 14th 2024, recalling January 11th

My head says, ‘Stay!’
Says I should keep inside,
Although it’s a beautiful day,
To sort these accumulated papers and file them away.

My heart says, ‘No, you must go!’
Get outside to have fun;
And I agree.

So I must seek, using my coastal wits,
Somewhere to escape
The lazy but nevertheless needling northerly breeze:
Maybe even find some shore in a cliff’s lee
Where I can skin into the sea –
And thus make the very most of this rare gift:
A January morning so blue clear
That anywhere sheltered is, as noon nears,
Sunbathing warm.
