Roman invaders

My barrow yesterday, stacked with Alexanders
(Smyrnium olusatrum)
freshly uprooted from the bank across the road,
where they were threatening to choke the daffodils
planted by the village.
Introduced by the Romans, this is an edible plant –
although I don’t know anyone who has
tried cultivating it or,
and they’d surely have to be desperate,
doing anything with
tough-as-old-boots wayside specimens
such as these!
